About this live event

With the increase in wheelchair users to almost 3.3 million, wheelchair can provide primary means of mobility thus improving the quality of life and independence in individuals with musculoskeletal or neurological diagnosis. Equally important are optimal seating systems, which play a crucial role in preventing complications such as pressure ulcers and musculoskeletal issues. This course will delve into essential topics including the principles of wheelchair assessment, exploration of various wheelchair types and seating options, strategies for individualizing prescriptions based on specific needs and conditions, and the significance of continuous evaluation and adjustments.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the key principles of wheelchair positioning, its impact on health, risks of improper positioning, and wheelchair components.
  • Apply and interpret a wheelchar assessment that utilizes posture, pressure distribution, and standardized tests.
  • Create a tailored wheelchair plan that addresses the unique needs of individuals in orthopedic, pediatric, neurological, and geriatric populations.

This live interactive webinar is intended for Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapists, and Occupational Therapy Assistants. (PT, PTA, OT, COTA)

Agenda

6:00 - 6:30 pm: Introduction and Key principles of wheelchair positioning.
6:30 - 7:00 pm: Detailed assessment of wheel chairs and wheelchair users.
7:00 - 7:30 pm: Population specific positioning strategies (orthopedic, pediatric, neurological, and geriatric population).
7:30 - 8:00 pm: Evidence based practice and conclusions.

Live event Instructor(s)

  • Rina Pandya, PT, DPT, FHEA, PGLTHE

    Dr. Pandya is an MSK senior lecturer and Fellow, at the University of West England, Bristol, UK involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Dr. Pandya’s physical therapy career spans over 23 years, through the UK, the USA and the Middle East. She has worked in Nationalized Healthcare Services, American health care and self pay services in acute care, in-patient rehab, skilled nursing facility, home healthcare and outpatient clinic. In addition to being a clinician she has developed specialty programs based on evidence-based practice in her role as a project manager. She has also managed the Physical Therapy department in the capacity of Head of Department in a premier private hospital in Oman. Rina is an internationally published webinar presenter.

    Dr. Pandya graduated from Manipal University, India in 2000 as well as University of Michigan, in 2018 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Rina conducts live webinars and is part of the continuing professional development teaching community with courses published in the UK, US, South Africa, Ireland and Australia. Rina is a member of APTA, HCPC-UK and OAP-Oman.
