Too Much Stuff: Diagnosis & Treatment of Hoarding Disorder

About this live event

Individuals with hoarding behaviors can be puzzling for clinicians to understand and challenging to treat. Hoarding carries stigma and assumptions which may be perpetuated by clinicians who are not thoroughly informed on the psychological and behavioral aspects of this disorder. This workshop will present methods of assessing hoarding and diagnosing Hoarding Disorder in a systematic and compassionate manner. Differential diagnosis will also be discussed, along with additional factors to consider when conceptualizing hoarding behavior. The treatment of hoarding disorder will be explored by examining Motivational Interviewing, CBT, ERP, and skill building. Attendees will gain knowledge, insight, and clinical skills in their work with clients who hoard.

  • List evidence-based assessment methods for Hoarding Disorder and the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria of Hoarding Disorder.
  • Summarize the etiology of hoarding behavior.
  • Identify at least two evidenced-based treatment approaches for Hoarding Disorder.
  • Select appropriate treatment approaches and strategies based on unique client circumstances and needs.
  • Summarize five best practice considerations in the treatment of Hoarding Disorder.

  • Diane Bigler, LCSW, LSCSW

    Diane Bigler, LCSW, LSCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Missouri and Kansas with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field. She has held clinical positions as an outpatient and in-home therapist, and clinical supervisor. Diane was an Adjunct Professor of Social Work for 10 years at The University of Kansas, School of Social Welfare and a Field Liaison and Field Instructor. She has also held administrative positions as a program Director and Coordinator. Diane is a popular local and national trainer on a wide variety of mental health and workplace development topics for clinicians and corporations. Diane is most passionate about providing quality professional development to clinicians, employees, and leaders. For fun, Diane loves to spoil her four Dachshunds and rock out to 80’s music.
