Trauma-informed research is changing the landscape of the therapeutic modalities we offer our clients. Are you ready? Do you know what it means to be a trauma-informed massage therapist or bodyworker? The Mind/Body Connection: Aromatherapy, Trauma, and Massage is a course designed for clinicians looking for ways to meet their clients with compassion and know-how, wherever they may be on their healing journey. This course will examine the intersection between massage, aromatherapy, and the workings of the human nervous system, where trauma often resides. We already know that aromatherapy and massage are a powerful combination when it comes to the treatment of pain and stress. But how about when it comes to treating those dealing with physical and/or emotional trauma? What is the research that supports the use of aromatherapy when caring for those with physical and/or emotional trauma? As we investigate the answers to these questions, students will learn how to identify essential oils that are appropriate for therapeutic use in the treatment room, including seven essential oils that every trauma-informed therapist should keep on hand.

Learning Objectives

  • Investigate the short term impact and long term effects of trauma on the nervous, integumentary, and musculoskeletal systems.
  • Explore how the combination of massage and essential oils affect the nervous, integumentary, and musculoskeletal systems.
  • Examine and list the therapeutic qualities of seven essential oils known to mitigate the short term impact and long term effects of trauma.

    Barbara Lynn Cantone is a NYS-licensed massage therapist and aesthetician, a nationally certified clinical aromatherapist, private end-of-life doula, and ordained minister. She has founded and operated two wellness companies during her career, Body & Soul Restorations and Sojourner Wellness. She is currently working on completing her first novel while continuing to research and publish wellness-based articles under the umbrella of her latest endeavor, Salty Oyster Media.

  • Washington Board of Massage Therapy (WABMT)

    The Washington Board of Massage Therapy does not approve or preapprove continuing education activities. Licensees are responsible for choosing CE that meets requirements as per requirements outlined in WAC 246-830-475.
