The Mind/Body Connection: Massage, Aromatherapy, and Grief

Grief. Many of us–and eventually ALL of us–are affected by it. And yet, few of us have been given the tools and skills in order to healthily process and release our grief. Is it any wonder that our clients are at even more of a loss? This course will investigate the intersection between massage, aromatherapy, and grief. How does grief affect the body and mind? How can we recognize it in our clients? Does massage alleviate grief? How about aromatherapy? How can we use our massage skills to help clients navigate the landscape of grief? Utilizing the latest research in each of these areas, students will learn several techniques incorporating the powerful combination of massage and aromatherapy that will allow them to best serve those clients seeking relief and release from grief. Students will also learn how to identify essential oils that are appropriate for therapeutic use in the treatment room, including seven essential oils that are known to mitigate the short term trauma and long term effects of grief.

Learning Objectives

  • Investigate how grief affects the body and mind, with specific attention given to the nervous and musculoskeletal systems.
  • Learn how to utilize the powerful combination of massage and aromatherapy in order to best serve clients seeking relief from grief.
  • Examine and list the therapeutic qualities of seven essential oils known to mitigate the short term impact and long term effects of grief.

    Barbara Lynn Cantone is a NYS-licensed massage therapist and aesthetician, a nationally certified clinical aromatherapist, private end-of-life doula, and ordained minister. She has founded and operated two wellness companies during her career, Body & Soul Restorations and Sojourner Wellness. She is currently working on completing her first novel while continuing to research and publish wellness-based articles under the umbrella of her latest endeavor, Salty Oyster Media.
