"Mysteries of the Medical History" - Every Dental Professional's Toolkit in Successfully Interpreting A Patient’s Medical History

CE Hours 2

About this live event

What potential complications lurk behind the patient’s medical history that may impact dental therapy, alter treatment plans, and perhaps even result in medical emergencies? Armed only with a summary of past and current disease states and a list of current medications, will you be able to decipher the clues, solve the mysteries, and employ innovative treatment strategies to save the day? This program will provide an overview of the dental implications of not only the prescription and OTC drugs, supplements, and substances frequently used by patients but also the medications frequently used in the dental office. Special emphasis will be placed on providing dental hygienists with practical tools they can apply every day in interpreting a patient’s medical history and understanding the impact on patient care.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the medications, supplements, and substances most frequently encountered on a patient’s medical history and their impact on dental therapy.
  • Describe the medications frequently used in dentistry and their impact on a patient’s systemic illnesses and their treatment.
  • Explore potential undiagnosed systemic illness that may be present in a patient who is self-medicating to treat signs and symptoms but not the underlying condition itself.
