About this live event

Motivational interviewing is most effective in treating issues related to behavioral health diagnoses, as well as chronic care management in healthcare settings when integrated with other evidence-based interventions. Research supporting this assertion has been growing in the past ten years, largely focused on cognitive-behavioral therapy. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a third-wave cognitive behavioral approach defined by its six core processes. Within a review of the current literature, this workshop will explore similarities and complementary. differences that will yield improved client outcomes for a variety of target issues when integrated into practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish defining features between motivational interviewing and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
  • Identify how the four tasks of motivational interviewing can be integrated in ACT sessions to promote willingness to try new behaviors/cognitive tasks.
  • Identify ACT strategies that can build cognitive skills different from motivational interviewing approaches.

  • Angela R. Wood, Ph.D., LCSW-BACS, C-CATODSW

    Dr. Angela “Angie” Wood earned her MSW from Southern Illinois University in 1992, and a Ph.D. in social work from Tulane University in 2006. She has been a licensed clinical social worker for over 25 years, working in a variety of behavioral health settings such as addictions, mental health, criminal/juvenile justice, and family preservation. As a workshop trainer and educator for over 15 years, Dr. Wood has presented on clinical supervision, motivational interviewing, and substance abuse. Her research interests include the dissemination and implementation of motivational interviewing across practice settings. Dr. Wood is an assistant professor with the undergraduate social work program at Southeastern Louisiana University and contributing for Walden University’s School of Social Work and Human Service. She is one of three members of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers residing in Louisiana and has conducted over 100 workshops related to motivational interviewing.
