The Foundation of Neurodevelopment: Understanding Motor Patterns in Pediatric Growth and Learning

CE Hours 3

About this live event

The brain and body are three-dimensional by nature-made design and the body needs to feel safe to move through those dimensions. The primary motor patterns serve as protective mechanisms, determine specific roles and are the basis for transitional movement and sensory exploration. These developmental patterns influence the neuronal network and myelination for functioning. Genetically encoded nature-made movement patterns influence the acquisition of higher levels of motor and cognitive development. When a developing learner has a stable foundation, he/she is free and safe to practice motor patterns and variants. When a child lacks a foundation, compensation patterns emerge that prevent efficient integration, regulation and/or maturation of neurotypical development.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the impact of development on function and integration.
  • Discuss the brain-body connection related to function and integration.
  • Explain the difference between reflex and primary motor patterns and how these patterns influence development.
  • Demonstrate functional techniques for immediate application with clients.

Live event Instructor(s)

  • Amanda Letsos, OTR

Amanda has more than 30 years of experience as an occupational therapist. She received both her Master of Occupational Therapy and her Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy from Texas Woman's University. Although she specializes in pediatrics, due to her unique skillset, she works with adults as well. Her primary goal in practice has been to "never do a disservice to a client or family due to a lack of knowledge" and constantly challenges herself to think outside the traditional box of therapy. She has had extensive training with Masgutova Neurosensory Motor Reflex Integration (MNRI) and is a level one core in training; has completed levels 1-4 with Kinesiotaping; is certified with Handwriting Without Tears; is a Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention provider; Brain Gym instructor and consultant. Amanda closed her private practice in 2014, but continues to see clients privately in the home setting. She has taught continuing education courses on a variety of topics for the past 20 years and after 32 years of practice, recently retired from the school setting. She is the co-developer of the Universal School Function Tool and the developer of the Restroom Skills Evaluation and Remediation Tool. She has been a collaborator on numerous grant projects, developed motor lab curriculums for two projects and designed the SMaRT cart as part of an autism grant project. She was an editor for MNRI Archetype Movement and Integration.
