What does a therapist do when Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT are not working? Graduate therapy courses do not typically teach techniques that address how to help highly resistant, passively resistant, unresponsive, uninvolved, involuntary, and/or defiant clients to change. This program provides techniques, techniques, and more techniques. The Precursors Model of Change makes use of the prerequisites of change, all empirically supported. Without these factors positive change is unlikely. Put differently, we have all been taught the “defense mechanisms,” but this program presents the “offense mechanisms” of change. The main focus of this workshop is to provide powerful techniques to dissolve resistance so that CBT, DBT, EMDR, and other standard therapy approaches can then take effect. Some of these innovative techniques directly address tough issues such as blaming, explosive anger, passive resistance, suicidal ideation, drug addiction, lying, avoidance, hopelessness, and early abandonment. Techniques presented are easily applied, published strategies and methods that have remarkable change potential, such as the freedom challenge, concretization, addressing the root of anger, therapeutic button-pushing, subpersonalities, metalog, life circles, admiring negatives, validating intentions, powerful metaphors, existential validation, advanced empathy and more. This approach makes use of the resistance of the client and redirects it toward positive change. Based on the APA book, Therapy with Difficult Clients, now under revision for a new edition.
