Manual Therapy for Post-Concussion Headache

CE Hours 2

About this course

In this webinar, we will address the significant impact of concussions and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) on individuals, with an estimated 1.5 to 3.8 million affected in the US, according to the CDC. After a mTBI, common symptoms include Post-Traumatic Headache (PTH) and Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD). These conditions can lead to chronic pain, cognitive difficulties, and physiological symptoms that persist for months or even years after the injury. The debilitating effects of mTBI can include relentless pain, brain fog, hypersensitivity, muscle spasms, stiffness, dizziness, visual impairments, motor disorders, and even nausea or vomiting. Such symptoms can disrupt sleep and contribute to anxiety, irritability, and depression. Research highlights the significant role of craniocervical myofascial tension and trigger points (TPs) in PTH symptoms. Manual therapy plays a crucial role in the multifaceted rehabilitation management of mTBI, targeting abnormal fascial tension and TPs. Techniques such as massage, soft tissue mobilization/myofascial therapy, positional release, and craniosacral therapy can effectively address the neuromusculoskeletal irritation and mobility impairments characteristic of PTH. By discovering gentle methods of soft tissue release, therapists can immediately apply these techniques in their practice. Furthermore, this webinar will discuss the evidence-based rationale for integrating manual therapy into a comprehensive care plan, empowering therapists to help individuals with PTH lead healthier and more productive lives.

Learning Objectives

  • Define post-concussion syndrome and its relationship to post-traumatic headaches (PTH).
  • Discuss objective measures to document the effect of PTH on quality of life, function and mobility in people who have endured a concussion.
  • Demonstrate 6 manual therapy interventions to manage PTH.
  • Discuss the evidence for the effectiveness of manual therapy interventions for improving outcomes for people with PTH.
