Legacy of Trauma: The African American Experience

About this course

This training will explore the link between intergenerational and current trauma to individuals and communities interfacing with social service systems. Participants will be introduced to the connection between developmental trauma and contemporary challenges African Americans face in the systems. We will explore our experiences, perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors that may challenge constructive relationship development. We will discuss practical, culturally intelligent, and trauma-responsive strategies to keep our work moving forward in mediation, pro-social activities, and services delivery.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe how African American historical trauma impacts individuals from childhood, adolescence, and through adulthood.
  • Identify methods practitioners, providers, and mediators can use to build meaningful connections with African American adolescents and community members.
  • Identify life skills and daily practices that practitioners, providers, and mediators can utilize to have impactful connections with African American adolescents.

This self-paced course is intended for mental health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, MFT's and Addiction Professionals.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Brandon Jones, MA

    Brandon is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health & consultant. He specializes in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Historical and Intergenerational trauma, Social/Emotional Intelligence (EQ), Leadership, and Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). Brandon holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Minnesota, a Masters in Community Psychology from Metropolitan State University, and a Masters in Psychotherapy (MFT) from Adler Graduate School. Brandon is also a 2013 Bush Foundation Leadership Fellow. He lives by the motto of “Live life with Purpose on Purpose.”
